The City of Canal Fulton has adopted a plan for dividing the municipal corporation into different "zones" or "districts" in the interest of public health, safety, convenience, comfort, propperity, or generl welfare. These districts may regulate the use of buildings and premises and limit or regulate the height, bulk, and dimensions of yards, courts and other spaces within districts.

In Canal Fulton the zoning inspector, who is located in the lower level of City Hall, administers zoning ordinances. Office hours are 8:00am to 4:30 pm, Monday and Tuesday, and 8:00 am until Noon on Thursday. An application for a Zoning Certificate is required so that a proposed use, building, or structure, or a proposed change in use of a property, building, or structure can be checked for compliance with the Zoning Ordinance. A zoning certificate is also required for the construction of decks, fences and the installation of above ground and in the ground swimming pools.

Construction will usually also require obtaining a building permit from the Stark County Building Department. Before the Building Department will issue a building permit, they will ask to see the zoning certificate for the proposed construction.
